European Commission proposes new EU VAT measures

VAT in the Digital Age

On 8 December 2022, the European Commission proposed a series of measures to modernise and make the EU’s Value-Added Tax (VAT) system work better for businesses and more resilient to fraud by embracing and promoting digitalisation.
The proposal also aims to address challenges in the area of VAT.

The proposals of the European Commission mainly contain:
A new real-time digital reporting system based on e-invoicing;
Updated VAT rules for the platform economy;
A single VAT registration for businesses selling to consumers across the EU.

The proposed measures would now need to be adopted by the European Council.
